Looking Forward to 2016, New Buyers Premium Structure

calendarAs our calendar pages are turned to 2016, Wickliff Auctioneers remains committed to our mission statement, “Representation with Integrity and Expertise for our Sellers…A Constant Source of Quality Merchandise for our Buyers,” while providing the highest-level of service to our auction clients and customers.

We are thankful for the trust and confidence placed in us by our buyers and sellers, and for the legacy of integrity and quality established for the company over two decades ago. We continue that legacy as a company by studiously reviewing where we have been and where we are going, remaining “Indiana’s Leading Fine Arts Auctioneers.

Refined Consignments

Due to our daily involvement in researching the secondary market, we are increasingly aware of changes in market trends; we observe changes in the type and style of art, decorative arts or furnishings that today’s auction buyer is seeking. We have witnessed the downward trend of traditional styles, and an indifference toward the collectibles treasured by previous generations (i.e. Grandma’s dishes).

Wickliff Auctioneers will maintain our goal of offering quality items in our catalogued sessions. Regardless of trend or style, quality items will always find a market, albeit with reduced expectations of sale value. Antique, vintage or contemporary, each consignment will be evaluated for marketability and anticipated market response, with expectations communicated appropriately. Items that have a low estimate of approximately $150 or more will be included in our catalogued auction sessions, and marketed worldwide.

Given the considerable decline in decorator art (not decorative arts, ie- sculpture, bronzes, art glass, but art that was purchased originally for decorative purposes, antique or not), we will no longer seek any art that was not executed by a listed artist. “Listed” can be historic or current, or any artist who has achieved a level of accolade or success in the art community. Unsigned or unattributed art is no longer considered for catalogued sessions.

Estate clients may find more of their items offered in Marketplace (uncatalogued) sessions, as our threshold for including items in our catalogued auctions is increasing for 2016. Marketplace sessions will be conducted for estate sellers only, consisting of items of quality that may not meet catalogue auction standards. We will not seek individual consignments solely for Marketplace sessions.

Buyers Premium Structure Modification

The increasing nature of fraud associated with credit card payments and the ever-increasing costs associated with accepting credit cards has resulted in a modification of our Buyers Premium structure. While still remaining lower than other regional auction houses of our size and scope, our Buyers Premium has been modified to encourage payments by cash, certified funds or wire transfer by offering a 3% discount for these types of payments.

In effect, bidders who pay cash, check or wire transfer within 5 days of auction will pay the same premium as in 2015. Please note Buyers Premium schedule below.

We are installing a check verification device which works similarly to our credit card processing machine, as our fiduciary responsibility to our seller is unchanged. Securing valid forms of payment remains a priority.

The updated Buyers Premium schedule is as follows:

  • Monthly, catalogued auctions- A premium equal to 15% for live, phone and in-house absentee bidders and 18% for online bidders, of the final bid price will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the buyer, as part of the final purchase price.  A 3% discount of buyers premium is offered to bidders who pay by cash, check, certified/cashier’s check, money order or wire transfer IF TOTAL INVOICE IS PAID (RECEIVED IN OUR OFFICE) WITHIN 5 DAYS OF AUCTION.
  • Firearms auctions- 15% live/phone/in-house absentee and 20% for online bidders, for all forms of payment.
  • Buyers Premium for specialty auctions or online-only auctions is subject to change; please check each catalogue for details.

In Summary

As a leading, regional auction gallery, receiving consignments from the entire United States and marketing these items to a global audience, Wickliff Auctioneers remains Indiana’s Leading Fine Arts Auctioneers, unparalleled in our combination of market reach, industry recognition, staff, facility and resources, as well as in our commitment to focusing on auction marketing only.

For 2016 and beyond, our sellers can look forward to candid evaluations of consignments based on up-to-date market data and past experiences, and our buyers will see a continuing refinement of catalogued sessions, offering more opportunities for purchasing high quality fine jewelry, fine art, decorative arts, antiques or decorator furnishings.

Thank you for your continued patronage.
